International Journal of Nursing KnowledgeWe are pleased to announce the first “Virtual Issue” of the International Journal of Nursing Knowledge (IJNK)! Click here to view.

Virtual issues are topically-focused collections of articles published in IJNK. Articles are selected by a guest editor, and presented with the editor's summary and insights. This issue focuses on the topic of Concept Analysis, and includes six articles selected by Dr. Kay Avant, guest editor and NANDA International Fellow. The issue begins with Dr. Avant's commentary and article summaries.

Why Concept Analysis?
Concept analysis is a process used to describe the theoretical basis for a scientific discipline. Applying this to nursing, Dr. Avant states, "The basic building blocks for knowledge production are clearly defined concepts that describe or explain our practice phenomena. If you cannot clearly describe the phenomena of your practice so that someone else can immediately comprehend what you mean, then communication suffers and patient care is potentially compromised. Concept analysis is one way to achieve a clear theoretical or operational definition to describe practice phenomena so that everyone is “on the same page” when they talk about it or research it."

Benefits for Journal Manuscript Development
Dr. Jane Flanagan, IJNK Editor, is often asked whether a manuscript is appropriate for the journal. She states, "Through these virtual issues, our readers will gain an understanding about exactly what it is that we consider appropriate in terms of meeting our Aims and Scope The Virtual Issue series will provide potential authors with a sense of the journal – in terms of key topics and types of manuscripts we seek."
