Are you aware that NANDA's official name is now NANDA International? Why the change? It's no longer just a North American association; for
a long time now NANDA has had many international members and its work is international in scope-thus the change. NANDA's focus has also changed. As well as developed, updating and approving nursing diagnoses,
NANDA also focuses on integrating these diagnoses into standardized terminologies and classifications.
Dr. Judy Warren, NANDA Past President 1998-2000 and Chair of the Informatics Committee, and Dr. Margreta Ehnfors, ACENDIO President and NANDA member, have been named Fellows of the American College of Medical
Informations. Hearty congratulations to each one for this well-deserved honor.
National Medical Librarians Month was celebrated in October 2003. A NANDA-sponsored Website - www.nlinks.org - was acknowledged. Access: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/lo/profiles03/mcr.html
In October 2003, the American Nurses Association released the second edition of Nursing's
Social Policy Statement. This document defines nursing and places the profession within the context of society. It also speaks of nursing's contribution to health care and healthcare consumers. Those who are
committed to nursing diagnoses will be pleased with the document. Copies may be purchased from www.ana.org.
On July 1, 2003 Department of Health & Human Services Secretary
Tommy Thompson announced at the National Healthcare Informatics Infrastructure meeting in Washington, DC, that, under a contract signed by the College of Pathologists and the National Library of Medicine, SNOMED
will now be available at no charge to those within the United States. SNOMED is a terminology model and includes the NANDA diagnoses.
