Purpose of NANDA International
The purpose of NANDA International is to develop, refine and promote a taxonomy of nursing diagnostic terminology of general use to professional nurses.
Functions of the Organization
• Provide a structure for formalizing the language describing the phenomena of concern to nursing
• Provide a system for developing and refining nursing diagnoses • Facilitate nursing diagnosis research • Publish proceedings of the biennial conference • Publish a quarterly journal
• Provide support, communication and resources through conferences, publications and networking
Membership Requirements
Membership is open to all registered nurses with a current RN license. Associate
membership is extended to non-registered nurses and students who share an interest in the purpose of the Association.
Organizational Background
NANDA International was formed in 1982, replacing the National Conference Group
established in 1973. NANDA International has approximately 170 diagnoses approved for clinical testing and refinement.
A dynamic process of diagnosis review and taxonomy development continues toward identifying and classifying nursing
phenomena. NANDA International diagnoses are included in the Unified Medical Language System of the National Library
of Medicine, and NANDA International is working with the American Nurses Association in developing a Unified Nursing Language System. NANDA International also cooperates with the International Classification of Nursing Practice.
